Aim and Scope
The Journal of Integrative Dermatology publishes information concerning the skin and external and internal factors that modulate its function, health, and disease. The Journal of Integrative Dermatology is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal committed to the highest standards of rigor and relevance spanning multidisciplinary fields represented in integrative dermatology, including but not limited to conventional treatments and pharmaceuticals, naturopathic medicine, ayurveda, energy medicine, lifestyle medicine, nutrition, microbiome, gut health, functional medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine. The Journal of Integrative Dermatology is the first of its kind, expanding the rigorous evidence around interdisciplinary modalities in cutaneous science.
We aim to be the flagship journal for integrative practitioners that include conventional physicians, conventional practitioners, alternative and complementary practitioners, nutritionists, and research scientists committed to advancing a general understanding of cutaneous science. The Journal delivers original research that directly impacts patient care therapies, protocols, and strategies in relation to cutaneous science and disease. Well-designed clinical studies that expand our understanding and knowledge of treatments of dermatological diseases will receive priority. The journal publishes prospective clinical studies, epidemiological investigations, editorials, case reports, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. The topics will cover surgical, device, and medical-based care and will cover medical, ethical, socioeconomic, and access-to-care related issues. We welcome a wide range of viewpoints and support novelty in both theory and evidence. Science advances through an active dialogue between conceptual theory and concrete evidence. As such, we serves as a platform for such communication, in order to advance the field of integrative dermatology by delivering contents on basic science research, translational research, and clinical practice.
Mission statement
- To deliver evidence that will enhance the toolbox of therapeutic options can readily impact treatment success, patient experience, and practitioner-patient relationships
- To promote communication and collaboration between different disciplines relevant in cutaneous science and clinical dermatology
- To validate and expand scientific rigor to evidence around integrative approaches in dermatology
- To stimulate novel ideas and encourage public debate on progressive topics
Rationale
The interest in approaching medicine from multiple perspectives has grown immensely and the need for evidence-based reporting is more imperative than ever before. The need for integrative complementary and alternative approaches into medical care is more important than ever and the role of the dermatologist and dermatology-related care providers are vital in delivering this care. With the ongoing epidemic of general chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, it is critical that we have good evidence that will help advance the evidence around lifestyle and complementary based approaches along with pharmaceutical approaches.
Dermatology is a space where this critical evidence is needed with chronic conditions like adult acne, rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis that critically depend on integrative approaches. High-quality evidence around mind-body, dietary, gut health, microbiome, and complementary approaches are needed to help all stakeholders make better decisions for integrative health practices and guidelines.
Integrative dermatology combines treatment modalities across various disciplines to provide the best personalized options for patients. Non-conventional therapies may be regarded as non-scientific due to a relative lack of high-quality evidence. The Journal of Integrative Dermatology serves to bridge this gap. We aim to bring quality data and expert opinions into the practice of integrative dermatology. In the Hippocratic Oath, we committed ourselves to “apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures that are required”—not just those considered “conventional.” The Journal of Integrative Dermatology will serve to better equip practitioners to adhere to this oath, for the improvement of patients’ skin health.
The Journal of Integrative Dermatology is an online journal, and manuscripts will be published as soon as they have completed the peer review process. However, there will be an option to have individual articles printed on demand, as well as on a quarterly basis.
