The Journal of Integrative Dermatology is excited to request submissions for a special issue on the Microbiome and Nutrition. The Journal of Integrative Dermatology is focused on interdisciplinary perspectives that expand our knowledge and evidence in the field of integrative medicine and dermatology. The aim and the scope of the journal is to publish articles on information concerning the skin and external and internal factors that modulate its function, health, and disease. This special issue will cover topics spanning the role of nutrition and the microbiome on skin health and disease.

The current understanding of the microbiome and its key role in many areas of health are beginning to expand precipitously. Microbiology and dermatology are intricately connected. Recent work in both fields reveal that the commensal microbes, as well as pathogenic ones, contribute significantly to human health and disease. In the skin, the commensal microbes not only reinforce the barrier function but also modulates the immune system to maintain homeostasis, as well as to impact various skin conditions. Furthermore, the gut microbiota are key players in influencing systemic inflammation, emotional states, oxidative stress, and glycemic control – all which impact skin health, thus rendering the concept that the gut, brain, and skin are closely interconnected. Nutrition is a principal component of this interconnectedness. Thus, high quality evidence surrounding the role of nutrition and microbiome is needed to shape the way we approach dermatologic conditions such as acne, rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, cutaneous malignancies, and skin aging.

This is an incredibly exciting time, as the intricacies of the gut-brain-skin axis are being revealed. Scientific advances in understanding of this axis will improve integrative health practices and guidelines. We invite you to help advance dermatology and integrative medicine by contributing to our mission. Please submit your manuscripts that will expand the knowledge and evidence surrounding the microbiome and nutrition as it relates to skin health and disease.

Topics may include but not limited to: efficacy and effectiveness based research, cost based analyses, education and survey based investigations, and practice management and guideline based research. We are interested in other areas that you find important in the area of integrative dermatology and welcome requests for other topics that are not specifically addressed here. We strongly believe in supporting practitioner education and each of these submissions will have associated continuing medical education that is developed when appropriate.

The following formats are accepted for submissions:

  • Prospective studies that can be either brief communications or full communications.
  • Review articles in the form of targeted reviews, systematic reviews or meta-analyses.
  • “Practical Pearls” type articles that describe an expert and evidence-supported approach approach to the practical treatment of clinical disease
  • Perspective, Opinions, or Commentary articles that allow authors to present a personal opinion, point of view, theory, hypothesis, interpretation of a topic or an existing study.
  • Case series that describe a series of patients with a novel approach to treatment that is also described in the context of existing evidence and a summary of the existing medical literature and mechanisms to support the approach with patient care.

If you have any questions or ideas in regards to this special issue, please feel free to send comments and questions to info@jintegrativederm.com via our Editor-in-Chief.
